Perfecto Double Edge Long Handled Safety Razor Review - A Solid Performer, Nitpicking Aside

Perfecto's razor marks my first venture into the world of safety razors, and all-in-all, I'm very pleased with its performance. Paired with a Dorco blade, the shaving is easy and comfortable, slicing through hair like a hot knife through butter. Compared with the admittedly lower-quality, multi-bladed razors that I'm accustomed to, the difference is night and day. In fact I loved the experience so much, that it prompted me to buy another safety razor as a gift, though from a different company for the sake of comparing.

So, why the 3-star rating? I debated between 3 and 4 stars, and what it ultimately came down to was price. To be clear, at this razor's historic low price of ~$11, the Perfecto is a fantastic value—easily worthy of 4 or 5 stars. At its average price of ~$20 however, competition is more stiff, with other brands having differences in build quality—however slight—that may give them the edge at that price point.

Pros
• Very close shave, as long as you make a few passes from different angles.
• Comfortable to use and hold
• Minimal irritation
• Solid weight and feel
• Classy looking and finished beautifully

Cons
• Blades don't seem to always line up perfectly, requiring a little finesse when installing.
• The head isn't as long as the blade, meaning the blade itself juts out the side more than I'd like
• The handle is already squeaky when screwing/unscrewing, though it can probably be helped by drying well or applying oil

So really, the negatives are fairly trivial, and by no means ruin what is otherwise a very solid product. It's just that being the simple, singular purpose product it is, the little nitpicky stuff matters more and adds up.

If you can nab Perfecto's razor at the lower end of its price spectrum, you'll be getting a great deal on a razor that does exactly what it sets out to do. At its more standard price range, it's still not a bad buy by any means. Just be sure to explore your options!

Viking Blade Safety Razor Review - Solid, Shaves well, Protective

I started off safety shaving with a dollar-store knock-off of Weishi (and to think Weishi is a knock off of the old Gilette). Pretty good I must say, aside from the occasional nicks. Then I was surfing the edwin jagger and merkur when I chanced upon this product. The micro-comb lines were what pushed me to make the purchase, seeing how I want to enjoy the experience of wet shaving, but am usually half awake during my morning shave (and hence prone to nicking myself when I lose my attention).

When the product came, I immediately appreciated the heft. Feels like a solid tool which you will be using for many years to come. Good stuff. Then came the test. I mounted the blade, placed the razor gently on my cheek, and shaved. I could immediately feel the protectiveness of the blade, which makes the shave 'milder' if you use your usual shaving angle. The trick here is to adjust your angle such that you can feel the shave, yet not feel like the blade is going to cut you anytime. Good BBS shave all the way.

Excited by this product, I thought of giving myself an upgrade with an edwin jagger 89. Ouch. Somehow the safety bar felt like it was cutting into my face, and I kept getting nicked no matter how I adjust my shaving angle. So much for getting an 'upgrade'

So as you may have guessed, I'm now back to this Vikings Blade. Gives me a good BBS shave, everytime.

(as a precautionary note, I must say that YMMV. Different safety razors give different shave even for the same blade. I also bought a blade sampler pack and am happy to settle with Astra blues as my go-to blades.)

highly recommended for shavers.

Gibson Premium Razors - Review

I've been using traditional safety razors and straight razors for quite some time now so I have a bit to compare this razor to. First the The Positive. The weight and feel of the razor in your hand is great.and it seems like it's solidly constructed. 5 stars there.
The Neutral, This is a non-adjustable razor, which I knew when purchasing it. The blade angle isn't what I'd call aggressive. That's not a bad thing for some people, but I like a slightly different angle.
Now, the Negative. The finish on the razor I received less than ideal. It looks like whatever chrome (?) plating they used bubbled in several places. not to the point of pitting yet, but definitely not smooth. Also, the head is smaller than the length of the blade, so the side edges stick out. I've never seen that before and not a fan. Minus 1 Star.

And speaking of blades. The original ad said we'd get 10 Feather blades, which are excellent high quality Japanese super-sharp blades.....instead they sent some blades from who-cares-istan. If you're going to promise one thing, deliver it! Minus 1 star.

All in all I got it on the $13 special, so I'm not too heartbroken about it.

Viking Blades - Great shave for a fair price

It's been decades since I've used a DE, so . . . Otherwise, it's a good-looking, close-shaving, fairly priced razor. Be careful, especially if you're new to this type of razor or haven't used one in awhile, because you'll probably nick yourself a few times. Let the weight of the razor do the work. I've been using a Harry's razor for awhile and like it a lot, which is far superior to any cartridge razor you'll find in the store. But, with care and patience, the Viking produces better results for less money. I'm still acclimating to the Viking, including finding a blade I prefer.

Update: I like this razor better the more I use it, and I've now decided that the handle length is just fine. Also, as I've honed (pun intended) my shaving technique, the blood-letting has subsided. The unbranded blades provided, said to be Swedish steel, are very smooth and sharp. Regardless of the blade you use, take care to rinse thoroughly between strokes and after each shave, as shaving residue does tend to build up underneath the blade. So far, this razor kicks butt.

Double Edge Safety Razor with 20 Derby Blades - Excellent handle...bad head.

I bought this razor to to add to my growing razor collection. Being fairly new to the world of DE shaving, I thought that for the price of the razor and the head similarity to the DE89 this would be a steal. I got the package and was surprised at the good look of the razor. The heft of the razor reminded me of the feel of my Maggard MR6. The handle wasn't as thick as my MR6, but the weight was solid, almost as heavy and just as long (4 inches). The knurling was fabulous.

But...big problem with the head. First off, the pins in the cap were off center, so trying to get the blade lined up didn't work out to well. Then there is the issue of the blade having to be cranked in for it to be seated, which I believe was due to the arc of the cap being steep. This resulted in having the blade having a bad, or to sharp of a cutting angle. I ran the razor over my face and barely got any feedback. Unfortunately, this led me to throw out the head entirely without giving it a chance to shave my face.

Perhaps I am one of those unlucky few that got a bad specimen, but again, all is not lost for the handle is definitely worth the price to me. As a matter of fact, all things did turn out for the better because now I use the handle on my DE89 providing more heft than the original barley handle.

Vikings Blade Safety Razor Finds Its Way into the Grey Markets

The problems of producing substandard products arise when companies decide to take short cuts in their cost of production or sales price. Undoubtedly, cheap selling products attract more buyers but serious customers would also want products that can serve them for a very long time.

The manufacturers of the Vikings Blade have been in the safety razor making business for years now. One of the things that have kept the Vikings Blade among the Top 3 best sellers on Amazon is the superiority of the product and how well customers enjoy its use. To this end, the Vikings Blade is made from materials sourced from far away Sweden and Germany. During the construction and designing of the Vikings Blade, those items that are deemed defective and thrown away because they don’t meet with the standards, often find their way into the grey markets.

In the grey market, these companies like Smoothere, Bigfoot, JTrim, eBetter, etc., looking to copy its designs, buy them and repackage them. Most times they look exactly like the original Vikings Blade but are usually of a lower quality. They buy additional materials from countries like China because they are cheaper but usually substandard. These re-labelled products are sold off as the next best thing to products like the Vikings Blade.

By purchasing such products, knowingly or unknowingly, you are encouraging the intellectual theft and copyright infringement of the original products. Most of these repackaged and rebranded products do not have warranty and would leave you hanging in no distant time.

I highly recommend this product on Amazon or Julian Vue Website

My Daily Ritual with The Vikings Blade Safety Razor by Julian Vue

Getting A Good Shave

There are several things which when done together, gives a good shave. From understanding the wet shave techniques, using premium designed double edge safety razor to the good post-shave techniques. While technology may have advanced, your grandpa wet shaving techniques are still good and true to this day.

Wet Your Beard

To start off on your journey to get a good shave, it's best to wet it. Facial hair is able to absorb about 30% of its volume. What this does to the hair is that it makes it weak. Weak hairs are easy to cut also. You also avoid getting irritation on your skin when you apply the wet technique.

Shaving Cream

Usually people ask what makes a good shaving cream? While there are a few things to note, in summary, a good shaving cream should not foam up but should rather have a creamy lather. Applying shaving cream supplies your skin with not only rich lubricants but also skin nourishing moisturizers.

Quality Razor

The next most important thing is the quality of your blade. Even if you get the first two right, it is the razor that determines how smooth and clean the shave would turn out. A good double edge safety razor like the Viking blade is an ideal choice to use. Made from the most superior materials, this safety razor designed to give a good deep cut. It comes with a microcomb that prevents accidental cuts during shaving. When necessary, change blades to give a fresh new shave.

Rinse Your Face

When you are done shaving, the skin is at its most vulnerable stage. Rinse off the left over shaving cream with warm water and some antiseptic. Finish the rinsing with room temperature water and dry up your face.

After Shave Lotion

An after shave lotion helps to moisturize and soothe the skin. About two layers of skin are removed during shaving and this leaves your skin really dry. By applying an after shave, you reintroduce moisture to your face.

Vikings blade Review

I switched over to shaving with a DE razor a few years ago and have never looked back. This is the 3rd DE razor I've owned since then (my first was an Edwin Jagger which I loved but lost on a business trip, and my second was some Handlebar brand razor that I haven't been too happy with). I ordered this razor based on the reviews and the product description and it not only came exactly as described but has exceeded my expectations. I even like it better than the Edwin Jagger razor I had.

Other reviewers have pointed out a lot of the advantages of this razor's design and I would second those advantages. I love the ease with which one can replace the blade, as well as the fact that the ends of the blade aren't exposed so you don't have to worry about nicking your nostrils. But most importantly, for reasons I don't fully fathom, it just gives me a great shave, and in less time and with fewer nicks than any other razor I've used. I'm completely sold and already have gifted one to a friend.

In terms of cons, there aren't any. Some people might have different design preferences... The razor seems sturdily constructed and the finish seems to be of good quality, although it may be a tiny bit on the shiny side. The handle isn't solid metal due to the opening/closing mechanism and so it's not a very heavy razor, which is totally fine, but the Edwin Jagger I used to have had a heft to it that some people might like.

Otherwise, the opening/closing mechanism seems a bit more elaborate than the typical razor where you unscrew the head, and it remains to be seen how well it holds up to use over the months and years ahead. I noticed a couple tiny crossbars on the underside of the head that seem to serve to stop the opening mechanism and hold the head in place, and one of them seems like it could possibly slip out at some point. But then again it might never slip out. And even if it does slip out after a few years, given the price, it would be well worth having to buy another. I could lose this or damage it before then, anyhow.

In summary, I love the razor and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone.
